Economic Development

Opportunities in Hondo are being cultivated so diversified industries are able to expand with innovation in the sectors of manufacturing, healthcare, distribution and aviation. Balanced by an affordable quality of life, Hondo has an increasing trained work force and the South Texas Regional Training Center which houses a satellite center of Southwest Texas Junior College, which continues to expand its course offerings.

The City of Hondo has adopted a progressive business plan with a “Vision” to pursue the orderly development of its airports and industrial intermodal park facility. This evolving business park complex consists of approximately 3,000 acres and is designed to accommodate air, rail and trucking opportunities.

Hondo’s South Texas Regional Intermodal Park is strategically located adjacent to major transportation corridors. The site has access to U.S. 90 which is a major corridor to Texas, California and Mexico. The site also has dual rail service being provided by Union Pacific Railroad and Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad within competitive rail tariffs. The industrial park is also home to the Hondo Railroad which is the short line railroad operator within the park. The Hondo Railway HRR was recently named Shortline of the Year at BNSF Railway’s Annual Shortline Conference, held in Irving, Texas on October 13, 2011. The intermodal site is conveniently located 26 miles from San Antonio, Texas.

Four active runways and associated taxiways currently provide facilities capable of handling up to a Boeing 737 with anticipated expansions of the runways in the near future. Opportunities are available for the development of a Foreign Trade Zone. The modern 4,000 s.f. terminal building at the South Texas Regional Airport at Hondo includes a visitor’s waiting area, complete pilot lounge, flight planning area, restrooms with showers, free WI-FI, and a available private conference room. The terminal building is available to pilots 24 hours a day.

Complimented with a pro-business leadership attitude, competitive incentives, low tax burden and easy access to Hwy. 90, IH-10 and IH-35 combined with quality educational opportunities, hundreds of acres of outdoor activities and affordable cost of living make Hondo a desirable destination for year-round work and play.
